Happiness or a Ham Sandwich?

Which is better, eternal happiness or a ham sandwich?

It would appear that eternal happiness is better, but this is really not so!!

After all, nothing is better than eternal happiness, and a ham sandwich is certainly better than nothing. Therefore a ham sandwich is better than eternal happiness.

Packed - My Life and My House

A lot has happened since I last posted, which is why it's been a while since I last posted, which reminds me, I need to add something to (or about) the last post - just a cool little related item. Since I last wrote we have moved to a new house. I have posted pictures of lots of different houses. The one we moved into is the one posted here. Of course the furnishings you see belong to the former owners. Right now, imagine the same space but with lots of boxes! I have lots to post about the move and the house, but I need to wait until my head has a chance to stop spinning. I had not packed a single box as of Thursday - couldn't - could not do it given my work schedule. Thankfully we have the most awesome friends and family in the world and that some of them also happen to own pick-ups! I can't say enough thanks to friends and family who helped us. They worked tirelessly, packing my/our belongings, transporting them, unloading them, helping us to settle in and on and on. More on that in a future post. For now, since life seems so serious and busy, and even math, which I normally have so much fun with has become more work than fun at the moment, I want to post something math-related just for fun. See if you can figure out how it works (or not). Either way, have fun!

Drunken Game Theory?

RULE 1: You are playing The Game.

RULE 2: Whenever you think about The Game you lose.

RULE 3: Loss must be announced (to at least one other person).*

Object: The object of The Game is to forget that it exists. Frustratingly enough, you don't realize you're winning The Game until you lose!

Q&A: Q: Is this really a game? A: Yes. It involves a number of players trying to reach a certain objective. Q: Are there winning strategies? A: In some sense there are no winning strategies, because if you are thinking about strategies you are thinking about The Game and therefore losing it, but there are strategies for increasing the losses of others. (Information taken from "loseTheGame.com," click on link for more FAQs and strategies).

History: According the the Flinchley Central Hypothesis, The Game may be a parody of a parody of a parody of a game created by drunken game theorists 30 year ago. Click here for more information on the history.
*Since, if you choose to abide by the rules, you must announce your loss, would you mind doing so by sending the message "I just lost" to heidi@losethegame.com? I'm involved in their email Lose the Game Challenge.

Immortality 2

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work . . . I want to achieve it through not dying.

CancunWorld

By putting up a new post, I lost my favorite picture off of the bottom of this page: "I'm Telling You It's Not Straight!" by Seb Przd. (Click on the title to see it.) I love this artist's work, so I tried to create some like his. For my first attempt I chose to work with a picture of Cancun. Having been there, I figure if anything is going to be the center of the world, it should be. This technique is trickier than I had thought. If you'd like to see some really good examples, go to this link to see more of Seb Przd's excellent work.

Art from Mudd

-photographer: Anne White

This man is a phenomenon! His name is Arthur Benjamin, and he has combined his humor, magic and mathematics into what he calls "mathemagics." Whether you love math or are terrified by it you will be entertained by him. Click here to see him in action. He teaches at Harvey Mudd College (hence the title), but he also travels and performs. If you ever get a chance to see him, don't pass it up!

(I'm a little worried about putting this up immediately after my last post, which might have scared some people, but this is really VERY accessible and FUN! You might want to play along by getting out a calculator to trying to beat him to answers. The clip is 15 minutes long. If it pauses from time to time when you try to play it, let it load in the background first and then watch it.)

PS Thanks for the link, Delrae! :-)

I'm Telling You It's Not Straight!

I found this while exploring mathpuzzle.com. It was created by Seb Przd. More of his work can be found at this flickr site. His work is quite Escheresque, and I like what I term the "small world" images as well. (They are actually called stereographic projections, and well worth checking out!)

Questionable

Either the students in this school are phenomenal geniuses at physics or the person in charge of putting statements on this sign is phenomenally inept with punctuation.

God Save the Queen

Given my love of all things British and my detestation of all things political, I am posting a shortened version of an email I received today that brought a smile to my face.

The United States is getting repossessed.

A Message from John Cleese

To the citizens of the United States of America:

In light of your failure to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which she does not fancy).

Your new prime minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded.

A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Colony, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

01. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary.

02. Then look up aluminium, and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

03. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix "-ize" will be replaced by the suffix "-ise".

04. Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (Look up 'vocabulary'). Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication.

05. You will relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen".

06. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

07. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

08. You will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

09. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

10. An official from Her Majesty's Inland Revenue (i.e. tax collector) will be with you shortly to ensure the collection of all monies due (backdated to 1776). Until these are paid, there will be no representative government in the USA, in line with the policy: "No representation without taxation".

11. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 pm with proper cups and saucers (never mugs), and with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; strawberries in season.

12. Some tea has gone missing, and we expect it back. We'll be searching Boston first.

God save the Queen.

John Cleese

I found myself on the floor watching this video - not sure whether it was more due to rolling in laughter or collapsing from exhaustion - maybe a little of both. Thanks so much for sending this on Jeff!!

FBI, CIA, KGB, GPB(?!)

After the The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks came to my attention recently, I found myself stumbling into a huge blogging subculture of grammar policing. It was sort of like coming across FBI or CIA agents at work.

WARNING! If you misuse your apostrophies, use a lowercase L in a sign that otherwise includes all uppercase letters, destroy words by misuse or overuse, or otherwise thrash the convetions of grammar, this is your warning. LOOKOUT! The Grammar Police Bloggers (GPB) will certainly catch you! They are everywhere!

Here are some of their "reports."

Apostrophe Abuse
Apostrophism
lowercase L
Why a Tittle?
Literally, A Web Log
Banterist

ClEARlY this is a major problem, "as" witnes'sed by the fact that i "LiTERAllY" find these blog's updated FREQUETlY.
