Wee Sleeket Beastie

... mousie, thou art no thy-lane,*
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes o' mice an' men,
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promised joy!

Still, thou art blest, compared wi' me!
The present only thoucheth thee:
But och! I backward cast my e'e,
On prospects drear!
And forward, tho' I canna see,
I guess and fear!

from To a Mouse by Robert Burns (1759-1796)
"no thy-lane" means "not alone"

The last of our "wee sleeket beasties" died Friday. Her name was Oreo, and, as with her companions Munin, Hugin and Milkshake, gave us joy in her life, and we feel grief in her death.
